Just How Many Challenges Is Global Payroll Facing?
In a recent post, Norma Delgado advocates for the establishment of industry standards, such as ISO, for the payroll profession.
I believe this is the right step to take at this moment in time. The increasing complexity of global payroll, coupled with tighter resources as companies cut payroll costs, means there is precious little time for streamlining payroll processes.
Industry standards would provide much-needed guidance and considerably boost the ability of payroll teams worldwide to achieve best-in-class status.
I conducted a thought exercise: How many different challenges does a global payroll team have to manage nowadays? I identified no fewer than 40, and I am sure I missed some. Here they are:
1. Compliance with Local Regulations
2. Currency Exchange and Fluctuations
3. Data Security and Privacy
4. Integration with Global HR Systems
5. Understanding Local Taxation
6. Cultural and Language Differences
7. Benefit Disparities
8. Global Mobility and Expatriate Payroll
9. Time Zone Differences
10. Audit and Reporting Challenges
11. Local Banking and Payment Systems
12. Emerging Technologies and Automation
13. Political and Economic Instability
14. Employee Mobility and Remote Work
